Moana
(2016) PG

In ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches Moana’s island, she answers the ocean’s call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.

Highlights of Moana at
Starlight Cinemas (July 29)

  • More than 250 people came to enjoy Moana, our largest audience of the season.
  • Aloha Nui Dancers greeted attendees with colorful Hawaiian leis and before the movie. The group performed Moana-themed hula dances and taught  Polynesian dance moves. The kids left with some special memories and parents with adorable photos!
  • We are proud to share that we received many compliments about St. James Park. Patrons are pleasantly surprised how this event has positively changed their perception of the park.
  • Stardrop Events offered free Hawaiian-themed face painting. As always, the outdoor games provided by Viva Parks were a hit for friends and families alike.
  • Many people stopped by the OrangeTheory DTSJ booth to redeem a free class code and enter to win a swag bag full of fitness goodies.
  • Participants visited our partner downtown businesses Bun Me Up (inside Tiki Pete), Nomikai Social Food + DrinkeryDr. Funk Tiki Bar and Hula Bar and Kitchen before or after the event for the special Starlight Cinema offers.
  • We held a giveaway for those who took our survey and opted in to win a DTSJ T-shirt or tote bag, $25 gift card to Angkor Chef and 4 Cinequest tickets to select screenings.

Highlights of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at
Starlight Cinemas (July 15)

  •  
  • More than 200 people attended – we were all happy to see everyone enjoying a practically perfect summer night.
  • We partnered with local restaurant and bar Mama Kin to bring out local comedians from their Open Mic Night on Tuesdays. Shawn Frye, the open mic host, was our emcee and kept the energy going as he introduced our hilarious lineup of comics: Israel aka “Izzi” GarciaSam Schmidt, and Albert Lin. Many laughs were had as people settled in to watch the movie.
  • Attendees practiced their axe-throwing skills with Axe-Men Throw House and also entered in a giveaway to win a $50 gift certificate to their location on South Second Street.

Mean Girls
(2004) PG-13

A down-to-earth student joins a snobby clique in an effort to spy on the popular kids, then begins to act like them.

Highlights of Mean Girls night at
Starlight Cinemas (July 1)

  • We had at least 220 people attend — a really great turnout for the first movie of the series, the weekend before a holiday week and for such a hot day. The weather cooled down and it ended up being really nice.  
  • Our emcee, Mighty Mike McGee, was funny and kept the crowd engaged with trivia and prizes from First Tech
  • A lot of people wore pink, participated in the Mix 106.5‘s “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink” Giveaway and entered to win tickets to the PINK concert.
  • Guests were happy to share their favorite Mean Girls movie quote for our social media.
  • People entered Broadway San Jose‘s giveaway for their 2023-24 Prize Pack + a pair of tickets to see “Mean Girls the Musical.”
  • People played lawn games brought out by Viva Parks, visited the LGBTQ Youth Space booth, and stopped by the OrangeTheory booth for a free class code and swag bag of fitness goodies.
  • GRPC‘s DIY Burn Book activity was really popular and many people got their face painted.
  • People enjoyed our movie snacks. 
  • And some movie-goers visited or plan to visit our partner businesses Nomikai and Mac’s Club.

Starlight Cinemas is free to the public thanks to our sponsors.

Yes. We love kids. We have some awesome games and fun planned for before the show – these are good for kids of all ages.
Food and drinks are not available at the park. Before the movie, grab food and drinks to go from one of our partner downtown restaurants, or stop by one of our late night partners for a bite and drinks after the movie.

Come an hour before dusk for pre-movie fun, games, activities for the whole family.

Check VTA.org for nearby bus stops and schedules. The closest garages are the Third Street Garage between Santa Clara and St. John streets and the Market & San Pedro Garage. There is also metered street parking surrounding the park that is free on weekends. The event will be held on the park corner near N. First and E. St. John streets, next to the historic stage.

The San Jose Downtown Association has produced free outdoor summertime movies for more than two decades under the Gypsy Cinemas, Cinema San Pedro, Cinema St. James and Starlight Cinemas names. SJDA was among the first producers to precede the film showings with games and activities.

Starlight Cinema is supported in part by the St. James Park and Public Life Grant from the City of San Jose. 

Parking

Five ParkSJ garages offer 90 minutes of free parking.
The garages closest to Starlight Cinemas at St. James Park are the Third Street Garage between Santa Clara and St. John streets and the Market & San Pedro Garage.
