SoFA District Closing Procedure

TOP PRIORITIES

Near Term Priorities, Years 2002-2005

Problem and Goal statement:

Events and promotions
SoFA needs immediate actions to attract people to the district, such as events and promotions. This priority includes advertising and publicity with media, banners, and art. In addition, an annual marketing plan will be formulated by members of the SoFA Committee working with other interested parties such as SoFA merchants. This marketing plan will discuss events, projects, and outreach with the overriding goal of positively impacting SoFA merchants. The plan will also address how to leverage other downtown activities (e.g. San Jose America Fest) and resources (e.g. the San Jose McEnery Convention Center) for maximum gain to the SoFA merchants and district overall. The plan will include a funding strategy and will lay out how success will be measured.

Entertainment closing time
Entertainment venues in SoFA should close at 4:00 AM instead of the current 2:00 AM. Alcoholic beverages could be served at 2:00 AM and establishments could serve food and nonalcoholic drinks and be allowed to remain open two more hours.

Convention Center expansion
Plans for the expansion of the Convention Center should be developed and shared for comments with SoFA and surroundings neighborhoods. Plans should incorporate improvements that benefit SoFA, such as a primary pedestrian entrance at Market and San Salvador.

Streetscape & the park
Plans for improving Parque de los Pobladores (Gore Park) and expanding it to the north and east, as well as initial designs for Market, First, and San Salvador streets should begin and immediate improvements should be made in the interim, such as murals and street furniture.

Former Dimension SIte and 500 South First building
These two sites should be further explored for development, and that development should start as soon as possible after the Fox California Theater construction is completed. The site of the former “Dimensions” night club is owned by the Redevelopment Agency and requests for development can occur immediately.

Valley Tile Block and Block 8
In addition, encourage the development of the “Valley Title block” and “Block 8” as soon as feasible.
