Student art adds life to downtown doors
16 winners from four San Jose High schools
Aspiring artists from four San Jose High Schools are putting their works on public view. Their “canvases” are utility doors on some of downtown’s biggest buildings.
Installed in May 9-10, the thoughtful, colorful, eclectic and sometimes whimsical pieces of art for the San Jose Downtown Foundation’s “Downtown Doors” project cover 17 double- and triple-panel doors outside the Fairmont San Jose, Pavilion building, San Jose Repertory Theatre and Camera 12 Cinemas.
The art will be visible to thousands of passersby on foot and passengers in vehicles for 12 months.
The Downtown Doors program, now in its fifth year, has grown from four doors in 2003. More than 100 entrants from Downtown College Prep, San Jose High Academy, Lincoln High School, Notre Dame High School and the East Side High School district, participated in the competition this year.
“The images this year demonstrate the diverse perspectives of San Jose residents,” said Jane Przybysz, a judge and member of the Downtown Foundation board. “The students also used their artistry to integrate their work into the urban feel of downtown.”
The artists, their teachers and families, private donors and the property owners and managers who allowed the artwork will attend a reception May 15 at the Silicon Valley Capital Club. The artists will receive Adobe Creative Suite 3 design software, including latest versions of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat from Adobe Systems at the ceremony.
Judging took place in March. The process to digitize, enlarge and transfer the artwork onto vinyl adhesive decals occurred in April.
