Take advantage of San Jose's warm, summer nights and enjoy a movie under the star-studded sky with good company. Explore one of three downtown neighborhoods (San Pedro Square, SoFA District, and Historic District) each week and meet the people and businesses that give downtown its character.

CSP crowd eatingSan Pedro Square every second Wed (Jun 10, Jul 8, Aug 12). New restaurants stand side by side veteran eating establishments; European-style café seating beckons. Come early, have a seat, and stay awhile.  

  • June 10 – Blazing Saddles (1974/ Rated R / 93 min) Directed by Mel Brooks.  Mel Brooks' uproarious, contagious and outrageous salute to the American Western is the last word in Western parodies. Cleavon Little portrays a railroad worker promoted to sheriff; Gene Wilder plays the Waco Kid; Madeline Kahn is Lily Von Shtumpp; and Harvey Korman is Hedley Lamarr.  They take you through one hilarious gag after another. 


Pre-movie entertainment: Enjoy western and country folk tunes by San Jose’s THE CARLESS HEARTS and try your hand at Classic Western trivia.

  • July 8 – Caddy Shack (1980/ Rated R / 107 min) Directed by Harold Ramis.  Harold Ramis's breezy, laugh-a-minute comedy features some of the most inventive and hilarious men in contemporary film.  Bushwood Country Club, bastion of the well-to-do, becomes a free-for-all when a mischievous rodent and Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) arrive! 

Pre-movie entertainment: Comedian kicking off the mood and wear your most outrageous plaid and/or golf outfit and compete for prizes!

  • August 12 – Monty Python and The Holy Grail (1975/ Rated PG/ 91 min) Directed by Gilliam and Jones.  Considered the first "proper" film by the Monty Python troupe.  The film spoofs the legends of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail.  Idle used the film as inspiration for the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical Spamalot.

Historic District every third Wed (Jun 17, Jul 15, Aug 19) on Post Street between Market and First streets. Discover unparalleled entertainment and dining options tucked inside some of downtown's oldest and grandest buildings, plus transit services steps from the front door.

  • June 17 – To Catch a Thief (1955/ NR/ 106 min) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.  Based on the novel by David Dodge; The story of a retired jewel thief, John Robie (Cary Grant), living a blameless life on the French Riviera. When a series of jewel robberies begin to take place on the Riviera, Robie is the natural suspect. 

Pre-movie entertainment: Lara Price (sultry blues) and Hitchcock movie trivia.

  • July 15 – Casablanca (1942/ NR/ 102 min)  Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman; directed by Lawrence W. Butler.  One of the most memorable of all film experiences.  Wartime refugees gather in Morocco to obtain scarce exit visas to Lisbon. The final airport scene is not to be forgotten. 

Pre-movie entertainment: Movie trivia and Bogart impersonation contest.

  • August 19 – A Streetcar Named Desire (1951/ NR /122 min)  Directed by Elia Kazan.  Blanche Dubois moves in with her sister, Stella, and Stella’s husband, Stanley.  Blanche refuses to come to terms with the death of her Southern aristocratic background, causing her to conflict with her lower-class brother-in-law. Stanley harshly forces her to face the facts, driving her to a complete personality breakdown in this cinematic version of the classic Tennessee Williams play.  

Pre-movie entertainment: Movie trivia and a Marlon Brando "Stella" shouting impersonation contest

SoFA District every fourth Wed of the month (Jun 24, Jul 22, Aug 26) at South First and William streets. An arts and entertainment hub and home of the growing late night gallery crawl, South First Fridays. The SoFA District is rich with options to stimulate your creativity.

  • June 24  – Mad Hot Ballroom (2005/ Rated PG/ 105 min) documentary feature directed by Marilyn Agrelo. 
 This inspiring documentary follows 11- year- olds from three schools in the toughest, most culturally diverse neighborhoods in NYC as they're involved in a program that requires students to take ten weeks of ballroom dancing.  These kids must overcome awkwardness, a lack of self-confidence to create a new path for themselves. 

Pre-movie entertainment: A live swing dance performance by dance group Double or Nothing.

  • July 22 – Romeo + Juliet (1996/ Rated PG/ 120 min) Directed by Baz Luhrmann.  Although set in modern times in the city of Verona Beach, it is still the same timeless, classic story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  The Montagues and Capulets are two feuding families, whose children meet and fall in love.  They have to hide their love from the world because they know that their parents will not allow them to be together. 

Pre-movie entertainment: Heroes Martial Arts showcasing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. PLUS Element 151 (locally produced) short film "WHISKEY TEARS" - A Ragtag Rockabilly Crew shows us the right way to waste time, and the long way to growing up. From local San Jose Director Frank Door - including soundtrack by local band The Whiskey Avengers.

  • August 26 – Shaun of the Dead (2004/ Rated R/ 99 min) Directed by Edgar Wright.  Shaun is a 29-year-old slacker who can’t get motivated about anything - even his girlfriend.  When he finds that his whole town has turned into a creeping crawling nation of zombies he finds his purpose in life as his friends go on a baddie-bashing spree.  He is determined to save his town, his girl and his family or die trying in this horror comedy.
