San Jose Downtown Association

 

 

SJDA, a non-profit membership based organization founded in 1986, represents business and property owners working to enhance the vitality and livability of downtown San Jose.  SJDA strives to improve business conditions in downtown San Jose and promote a positive image of downtown through advertising, public relations and outdoor events.  SJDA events for 2009 include: Downtown San Jose Farmers’ Market, Music in the Park, Starlight Cinemas, Downtown Ice and various other public space programming initiatives.  The SJDA office is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

 

 

 

Communications Intern 2010

Description:  The San Jose Downtown Association seeks an outgoing communications intern with good writing and interpersonal skills to join our fun and energetic team.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with SJDA’s weekly electronic newsletter Downtowner Online,
  • Assisting with writing a variety of media and event materials, including social networking websites
  • Fact-checking and / or updating websites
  • Assisting with media lists
  • Monitoring media / maintaining photo and clip libraries
  • Assisting at events with SJDA / downtown information dissemination

 

Works closely with the Communications Department and indirectly with promotions, events and development.


Qualifications:    Must be enrolled in related college coursework and/or interest with the job description above.  
Proficient in MS Word and MS Excel (Mac savvy)

Schedule:    Available 10-20 hours per week over 16 weeks/ total of 240 hours, beginning February, 2010.  Must be available Tuesday.  Other hours are flexible.

Compensation:  This is an unpaid internship position, and therefore is not eligible to participate in company benefits, personal time off or paid holidays.

Events and Promotions Internship Position – Music in the Park

Description:
The San Jose Downtown Association’s (SJDA) Events and Promotions summer internship for Music in the Park is ideal for a candidate interested in gaining valuable event logistics and promotions knowledge.  SJDA provides hands on experience in a fast-paced, fun, non-profit environment. The seasonal position allows interns a chance to work in a unique and creative atmosphere while gaining contacts and skills beneficial to a future career in a variety of areas, including event production.

Music in the Park Events and Promotions Internship duties consist of providing support to SJDA’s Events and Promotions Manager and include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in implementing weekly production duties including but not limited to on site logistical set up, volunteer staffing and coordination, managing event promotional booths and weekly event production advance work (i.e. managing, creating and distributing weekly food/beverage coupons for event staff and crew and posting weekly tow zone signs around the park).
  • Managing event food vendors including weekly scheduling and revenue collection and serving as the SJDA liaison with the Department of Environmental Health.
  • Acting as the primary liaison with the San Jose Fire Department during weekly on-site inspections and with the SJ Conservation Corps during weekly event clean up activities.
  • Developing and tracking event promotional marketing efforts.
  • Assisting with outreach at non-SJDA community events such as the San Jose Jazz Festival and Left Coast Live – including staffing the SJDA information booth and coordinating neighborhood and business promotional outreach efforts.


Necessary Qualifications:

  • MAC proficient – including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point. Knowledge of Adobe applications a plus.
  • Willingness to learn via hands-on, on-site experience
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, and willingness to take on a full range of tasks


Schedule:  18 - 24 hours per week May 17 - August 27, 2010 (course-related requirements negotiable).  Must be available Thursdays, 11a.m. – 11p.m., from June 3 – August 26.

Compensation:  This is an unpaid internship position, and therefore is not eligible to participate in company benefits, personal time off or paid holidays.

The seasonal position allows interns a chance to work in a unique and creative atmosphere while gaining contacts and skills beneficial to a future career in a variety of areas, including event production.

Events and Promotions Internship for Starlight Cinemas and Downtown San Jose Farmer’s Market duties consist of providing support to SJDA’s Events and Promotions Manager and include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing Starlight Cinemas concessions vendors and Farmers’ Market Merchant at Market vendors - including weekly scheduling, advance work and revenue collection.
  • Developing and tracking promotional marketing efforts - including conducting weekly surveys and formulating results - and assisting with neighborhood and business promotional outreach efforts.

Accounting Assistant - Internship

Description:
San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA) is seeking a part-time Accounting Assistant Intern to join our fun and energetic team.  The Accounting Intern provides support services for the San Jose Downtown Association.  This position is part time (approximately 10-15 hours per week) and is supervised by the Director of Finance and Administration.


What You’ll Do:

  • Assist with general ledger maintenance.
  • Assist with financial statement preparation as necessary.
  • Develop financial reports for SJDA program staff members that provide accurate, up-to-date information in a user-friendly format.  
  • Provide assistance with fiscal year-end adjustments and close.
  • Provide assistance with preparation of monthly city reimbursable packets and recording of the transactions.
  • Provide assistance with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank statement reconciliation, and financial statement preparation.
  • Perform other accounting related duties as required.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • No experience necessary – this is a trainee position.
  • Currently pursing a career in accounting/finance.

 

Compensation:  This position is an unpaid, temporary, part-time internship, and therefore is not eligible to participate in the company benefits, PTO or paid holidays.
