3 downtown restaurants participated in the restaurant category:

Angelou's Mexican Grill (21 N. Second Street)

La Pinata (17 N. San Pedro St.)

La Victoria Taqueria (131 W. Santa Clara St.)

LA PINATA's traditional style salsa won in the restaurant category, but it was a very tight decision by only a couple points. ANGELOU's MEXICAN GRILL's green sauce tied with LA VICTORIA's orange sauce entry for 2nd.

Renee Melero & Family from Gilroy, CA won with their traditional family recipe that includes the following ingredients:

Roma tomatoes, jalepenos, yellow wax chili’s, cilantro, cumin, oregano, salt, fresh lime juice and of course... Gilroy GARLIC!

Recipes were shared by the below three winners :

Second place - Grilled Pineapple Salsa – by anonymous downtown resident

2 pineapples - cleaned, slice, grilled and chopped into small dice

8 jalepenos – chopped into small dice

1 red onion – cleaned, sliced grilled and diced

1 bu cilantro – chiffonade

MIX all of above together

3 pasilla chiles dried

5 arbol chilies dried

1 large tomato, chop

1 yellow onion, chop

1 tsp toasted cumin seeds

5-6 whole cloves garlic

Place all of this in sauce pot, cover with water, and cook until all is soft, about 10 minutes.

1 tbsp. honey

Juice of lemont

1 tbsp. rendered bacon fat

S/p to taste

Blend cooked chiles, onion, tomato, garlic and cumin in a blender. Add honey, lemon juice and bacon fat, finish with salt and pepper. Let this cool and then add to pineapple mixture.

Third place was a tie between San Jose resident Lisa Franklin (Grilled Eggplant & Sweet Pepper salsa) and Steven Wells of Concept Works with his Salsa Verde – a fresco pico de gallo

Salsa Verde - A fresco Pico de Gallo from Steve Wells of Conceptworks, San Jose

1 Lb Tomatillas - Remove the stems and paper husks.

1 Medium White Onion

1 Bunch Cilantro - Rinse thoroughly; use the leaves and some stems.

2 Cloves Garlic - Peeled

3 Large Jalapeño Chilies - Optional. Remove the stems.

1 Large Lime - Juice and pulp

1 Large D’Anjou Pear - Remove the stem and core

This is very easy to make using a food processor in pulse mode to maintain a coarse texture for the main ingredients. Process each ingredient separately in turn, and stir into a large bowl.

Tomatillas may produce a lot of liquid depending on their moisture content. Process to a medium coarseness and pour off excess liquid.

Process the onion and cilantro to a coarse texture.

Process the garlic and jalapeños to a fine mince. Increase or decrease the quantity of jalapeños for spicier or milder results, respectively. Leave them out for a batch suitable for children or those with low capsicum tolerance. Process the pear to a coarse texture and stir promptly into the main bowl. Besides adding flavor, the lime juice helps keeps the pear from discoloring.

Stir all the ingredients to mix well and serve with tortilla chips.

Grilled eggplant and sweet pepper salsa – from Lisa Franklin of San Jose

2-3 (hot) jalapeños

1 large eggplant: sliced into thin rounds, diced seed removed

5-6 multicolored (small) sweet peppers: sliced in halves

10-12 cloves of garlic- minced

12 ripe ROMA tomatoes; remove seeds with flesh and dice remaining fruit

Fresh cilantro, chopped (1/3 cup)

Course ground sea salt

Course ground pepper (black)

½ cup black beans

Extra virgin olive oil- enough to lightly coat eggplant and peppers

1 small red onion; finely diced

Directions:

Place eggplant and peppers on large baking sheet. Drizzle with plenty of olive oil and salt/pepper to taste. Grill on outdoor BBQ until lightly charred and tender (SOFT)- set aside to cool

Combine tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños and beans in large bowl. Dice eggplants and peppers once they are cool enough. Add red onion, and squeeze about one tablespoon of fresh lime juice over ingredients and mix well. Chill for 2 hours.
